Nevo and Shaul: Balancing Career, Culture and the Dream of Family

Nevo and Shaul met in their early twenties, and their shared values and commitment to Jewish culture, though secular in practice, formed the foundation of their relationship. Their journey together has spanned continents and cultures.
After establishing their first home in Tel Aviv, they embarked on separate but transformative paths – one pursuing doctoral studies at Northwestern University, while the other engaged in community development work in Nepal with Tevel B’Tzedek. These experiences, including living through the 2015 Nepal earthquake, strengthened their bond and commitment to building a life together.
Now proudly calling Chicago home, they were married at city hall in 2018. Their professional lives reflect their values and dedication to community impact. Nevo works in the creative industries, crafting narratives that aim to align with his values, while Shaul focuses his research on ensuring technology benefits rather than threatens communities. As they approached their forties, they felt they’ve achieved the balance they sought – established careers, a strong support network, and the wisdom that comes from building a life across cultures. Their families have shown unwavering support for their dream of parenthood, and they’re committed to raising their future child in Chicago’s diverse, vibrant community.
Through the Jewish United Fund’s support, they hope to overcome the unique challenges same-sex couples face in building a family, ready to create a home filled with love, understanding, and the values that have sustained Jewish people through generations.
Navo and Shaul are recipients of the Path to Parenthood Grant from the Jewish United Fund – Chicago.
